To spot the mangrove Rivulus, it’s important to first identify the microhabitat they live in. For that, a deep observation of the mangrove is needed. This fish mostly lives where the black and red mangroves are present, where there is a little of water (between 25 and 35 ppt), a lot of mud and leaf…

Best poster for Morgane Van Antro
Our former master student Morgane Van Antro won the award for the best poster at the 2017 Benelux Congress of Zoology held at Wageningen (link). After Anne-Sophie Voisin award in 2014, it’s the second time that our laboratory has such a success to this international conference mainly focused on young researchers. The poster presented by…

New article published in Aquatic Toxicology
Our PhD student Elodie Falisse has published a research article in Aquatic Toxicology about the effects of the bactericide product Triclosan on zebrafish larvae. She combined multidisciplinary approaches such as physiology, biochemistry and proteomics. Main results suggest that triclosan might disturb the development of zebrafish larvae and induce compensatory mechanisms. The article can be found…
Congratulations to our MSc students
Our MSc students Morgane Van Antro and Toa Avalos Cascante have brightly defended their thesis and have now left Belgium for international internships. Their works investigated how the mangrove rivulus responds to environmental stress during early life stages. Some amazing results will be published during the following months.
Free recordings SETAC conferences
Free recordings of the SETAC conferences, including the last conference in Orlando, are available here : http://setac.sclivelearningcenter.com/index.aspx?PID=9486&SID=215610. Three recordings from our lab are available when typing Falisse or Silvestre.
Two new articles published
LEAP has just published two new scientific articles that are now available online. First one is our first article related to epigenetics in the zebrafish and is the result of Jennifer Dorts work (with the help of Elodie Falisse ane Enora Flamion). We emphasize the effects of environmental stressors during the embryogenesis of this model…
Softball tournament
For the second year, a team from the department of Biology played the softball tournament of the Namur Angels (Baseball and Softball club). The captain of the team, Frédéric Silvestre, is happy with a brillant 6th place (of 11 teams). Beside F Silvestre, 4 members of our laboratory were part of the team : Alessandra…
Rivulus genome
The genome of our model species, the mangrove rivulus, has been published in Genome Biology and Evolution by a consortium of scientists including our colleague Ryan Earley (Univeristy of Alabama). This publication will improve our researches in proteomics and epigenetics in this amazing fish. http://gbe.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2016/06/18/gbe.evw145.abstract
Field trip in France
In early July, 22 students from different programs (biology, geology, veterinary) went to Devoluy (South of France) for a field training experience with the help of several professors and assistants. They could hike in mountains while studying insects, birds, plants and geology. This is a great opportunity for students in any scientific field to learn…
